Zanzibar -- Stone Town goodbye

We are back in Yabello as of last night, but before I delve into Ethiopia topics I want to finish my little Zanzibar travelogue...

Our last two nights in ZNZ were spent in Stone Town, where the old town is made up of tiny warren-like alleys that pass as streets -- though no cars can fit in there. It's pretty easy to get lost, but this time we stayed at the same hotel and were able to recognize our way around that area, at least.

We caught a ride with a staff member of the Paradise Beach Lodge in Paje, so our arrival on the rainy Monday was delayed by both the weather and the staff driver's own schedule. We didn't mind a few extra hours playing on the rainy Paje beach, though.

On Tuesday we decided we could not stay away from the beach for one whole day, so we took a taxi out to the Mbweni Ruins Hotel at the recommendation of our hotel owner. The hotel is located on the beach about 7km outside of Stone Town. On the hotel property you can tour the ruins of a former freed slave colony, part of which has apparently been renovated into a day spa. Interesting.

We arrived at low tide, so we toured the ruins and botanical gardens, and explored the tide pools until the sight of the beautiful and empty hotel pool was too much for us. The hotel manager and pool manager grudgingly allowed ONLY ONE of us to swim (with the baby, we assumed?), so Nate and Cora went for a dip while I filmed them and lounged in a beach chair with my Kindle.

After lunch, the tide was in again and we could all swim freely in the Indian Ocean on last time.

The rest of our time in Stone Town was spent consuming various forms of ice cream and wandering the labyrinthine streets of the old town.

Goodbye Zanzibar!

I loved all of the island adventures and salt-water baby Cora! Her dance moves and pool-jumps in the videos are killer! I'm so glad you all had such fun! Eat some fresh paya for me! xoxo

Thanks, AJ! Hope all is well in NYC - maybe we'll actually get to see each other this summer. Come visit in August to swim in the waterfalls and meet Jensen baby #2!
