ADK winter weekend: Indian Lake

This year was our fifth annual Adirondack winter weekend with Janet and Pete, and our fourth with Mandy and Sky along. We found a beautiful house rental in Indian Lake near the town, but surrounded by woods. This year we stayed Friday-Sunday nights, which left lots of time for games, relaxing, snow shoeing, and sledding.

Saturday morning we explored the woods around the house and practiced with our kid snowshoes

The big event for the weekend was the Long Lake Winter Festival, which we discovered last year and which we purposely planned around this year. Specifically, we brought the fixin's for our own cardboard sled to race in the relays on Saturday.

On Saturday morning Nate, Cora, Skylar, and I constructed a bobsled-style box sled.

I will let you watch this video and decide how well our design worked:

Suffice it to say that we spied on our competition a lot this year and we have some ideas to strengthen our performance next year. Anyway, we had a great time at the Long Lake festival -- free ice skating, warming ourselves by the fire, eating hot dogs, and watching the snow mobiles come and go.

On Sunday we went out for a snow shoe hike on the Rock River trail near the Sawyer Mountain trail we hiked in 2012. Silas rode in the backpack, but Cora and Skylar did a pretty good job at using their snow shoes... and the sled that we pulled for them when their "legs got too tired".

Getting to the trail required climbing down a STEEP snowbank,
which resulted in this scene (Cora is laughing)

The rest of the group got ahead of me and Cora after a while, so she and decided to turn back toward the car and take our time hiking. It was a really magical time to share with my munchkin -- we were singing and exploring and observing the forest, and I only had to give her piggy back rides every once in a while (once the lollypop bribe in my pocket ran out).

Checking out a stick

Monday morning we had to clean up and leave pretty quickly to get Nate home to Cornell for a 2pm meeting. All in all, it was another successful ADK weekend!
